Sept. 17 through 23 proclaimed Constitution Week in Newton County
Newton County Chairman Marcello Banes proclaimed the week of Sept. 17 through Sept. 23 as Constitution Week in Newton County.
Banes, pictured with Stephanie Fortson, Second Vice Regent, and Alice Walker, Regent of the Newton Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, signed the proclamation in the Newton County Historic Courthouse on Thursday, Aug. 16. The proclamation recognizes the 231st anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America by members of the Constitutional Convention.
At the request of the Daughters of the American Revolution curators at churches and buildings with bell towers are asked to ring their bells at 4 p.m. on Sept. 17, to recognize the signing of the Constitution, which took place on Sept. 17, 1787. The Covington Branch of the Newton County Library System will have books on the Constitution and its signers on display during Constitution Week.
